Grotte de La Verna
Pierre Saint-Martin, Sainte Engrace
We are going to visit the largest show cave in the world! Be prepared for a day to take your breath away. Participants will make their own way to Saint Engrace, a beautiful drive into the Pyrenees taking around an hour and a quarter from Salies.
We will meet at 10.15am at the Welcome Centre of La Verna, where, after some simple instruction from our guide we will board mini vans, for an exhilarating 20 minute ride, up the mountain, to the entrance of the cave. Here we will take our hard hats, and proceed 600 metres along the tunnel to arrive deep in the heart of the La Pierre Saint-Martin limestone massif. To say more would be to spoil the adventure!!
The tour lasts approximately 1 hour, you will need sturdy shoes and warm clothing (the ambient temperature is 6 degrees celcius) binoculars are recommended. The mini vans take us back to base.
The trip is not suitable for anyone with vertigo or claustrophobia, but is accessible for people with reduced mobility. Guided tour 14 euros per head (assuming minimum 17 participants).
After our visit we will move on to a traditional Basque Auberge, called Berriex, for lunch, which will feature truly local produce. Four courses, wine and coffee 20 euros per head.
Only 30 places are available, so please sign up now to avoid missing out on this very special day.
Final details will be sent out after the booking deadline of 17 May. Prepayment (34 euros per person) will be required and sorry, but no refunds after the closing date, as the Club will be charged. Details of how to prepay will be sent to everyone who signs up.
