Birdwatchers Special Trip!
We last visited the National Reserve of Arjuzanx a few years ago, it is an old lignite mine, 2,679 hectares, restored by EDF in 1987 to become the Reserve National de Chasse et de Faune Sauvage. Due to popular demand, a second visit had been arranged to see the Grues Cendrée (Cranes) arrive at their dormitory for the night! Many of the Grues spend their winter here, at the reserve.
Arjuzanx is approximately an hour and a quarter drive from Salies. A long way you might think for an outing in January, BUT, this is the only time of year we can see these amazing birds, from the top of the lofty observation tower.
We will meet for lunch at 12 noon at the Bistrot Blue, Hotel du Lac in Arjuzanx. As the group is only 10 you may choose and pay for any choice from the menu. All main courses 12 euros.
Around 2pm we will depart for the reserve, for those who wish you may take a brisk walk around the lake, 7 km, to see the wildlife. Alternatively you can stroll to the nearby hides to see the bird life on the lake.
From 3.30 pm we will assemble in the visitor center, to be taken by mini vans deep into the forest. We will then climb the multilevel stairs to arrive in the observation tower and await the arrival of the Grues Cendrée, as dusk descends, so do the birds. If you love seeing the grues fly overhead near you, you will find this an amazing experience.
There are only 10 places available in the tower, so sign up quickly to be sure of a place.
Cost of visit 6.60€ per person. Payable on the day.
Deadline for subscription Sunday 26th January unless already full!
IF THERE IS ENOUGH INTEREST FOR THIS TRIP, IT MAY BE POSSIBLE TO ORGANISE A THIRD DATE.
